THE ALMÁSY COLLECTION
The noble Almásy family has been residing in Bernstein castle since 1892. The family has a history of adventurers, discoverers and grand hosts. Family member László Almásy, a renowned explorer of his time achieved world fame through being the main character in the book and movie „The English Patient“. The Almásy family together with wine expert Sarah Heller MW curated a collection of outstanding wines from Austria and neighbouring countries, which once belonged together. The Almásy Collection represents the jewels of wine history.
The collection reimagines the wine cellar that might have greeted guests to Bernstein Castle had the territory never been divided. It includes regional classics like bright, bracing Grüner Veltliner and juicy Zweigelt, but also historic sites and varieties too long overlooked, made with partners who share our goal of revitalising this heritage. Each wine is named according to where it stands relative to Bernstein Castle, the symbol of this project to rebind broken ties.

SARAH HELLER MW
Master of Wine, whose own German, Korean and Chinese family understands too well the dividing power of borders, has joined forces with the Almásys in a project to reconnect the region through the medium of wine.
THE ALMÁSY FAMILY
The Almásy are a Central European noble family of explorers, diplomats and aviators. From their historic base at Bernstein Castle in Burgenland, its members have long forged fearlessly through the world’s deserts, rivers and forests, whether by automobile, airplane or motorbike. Yet at the end of WWI, like all peoples of this region, they found themselves in a new fractured and dislocated Europe. Bernstein Castle — previously Hungarian — fell in the new country of Austria.
